Additional information on this NGO efforts
I’ll tell you now some background information about SOS FAUNA efforts. The work of this NGO goes beyond the imaginable for any “normal” person. For instance today, even in the New Year’s eve they are working on, among many other plans, a macaw confiscation (this bird is kept in a small cage above a nightclub).
They constantly receive wild and domestic animals and help in confiscation actions working side by side with the police to frustrate smuggling and poaching actions. Unfortunately many birds can’t be confiscated just because there isn’t enough space and resources to receive them all.
That’s where releasing confiscated birds also helps: not only in the individual’s welfare but also helping to create vacant places for new birds to arrive and creating opportunities for law enforcement as more and more birds can be confiscated and poachers start to lose their profits.
One of the confiscations which they participated involved more than 70 blue-fronted Amazon nestlings in 2006.
This picture shows some of them before going to SOS FAUNA:

Working tirelessly around the clock to feed the helpless chicks and fully rehabilitate them in the following months many of them could be saved.

A large flight enclosure was also specifically built to help them to develop their social and flight skills.

Now three years later these birds are more than ready to go! The large private farm where they will be released (6000 ha) preserves much of the native fauna and flora of the Pantanal region.
Giant anteaters, rheas and many other wild animals which are hardly seen elsewhere due hunting/habitat destruction can be found and protected in this property.

Along with several dedicated Brazilian individuals and organizations which already support SOS FAUNA, WPT will make a partnership in order to return these blue-fronted back to where they should never been taken.
Plans for 2010 are many and thanks to all WPT supporters they will become a reality. A happy new year for you with renewed hopes for parrot protection!
