Keeping a pet parrot can be a rewarding and wonderful experience. Owning one, however, is a tremendous responsibility. The decision to keep a parrot should be considered carefully.
Parrots are stunningly complex in their behaviour and intelligence. In the wild they are animals that lead rich lives: foraging, breeding and maintaining strong social bonds. This diverse life is often difficult to duplicate in captivity. As their keepers the best we can hope for is to approximate it as closely as possible.
The World Parrot Trust (WPT) seeks to provide quality guidance to those keeping parrots in captivity. We do not endorse the keeping of certain species above others; rather, we make recommendations based on the advice of experts for the application of proper nutrition, husbandry, veterinary care and behavioural enrichment of all species currently kept in captivity. We advocate for and encourage the concept of responsible aviculture.
Since there are millions of parrots in captivity we discourage the mass production of parrots for the pet trade. We support the adoption of rescued parrots already in the pet population as a preferred means of acquiring pets. WPT does not support the trapping of parrots in the wild for the pet trade.
