The Santarem Conure is formerly one of eight subspecies (races) of the Painted Conure (Pyrrhura picta). The other races include Deville's Conure, Rose-fronted Conure, Sinu Conure, and others, all of which are now classified as separate species. (Forshaw, 2006)

Colourization Adult:
P.a. amazonum: both adults crown to nape dark brown; blue stripe in front of eyes; face dark red/brown; ear coverts brown/buff; upper breast grey/green scalloped grey/buff, lower breast green scalloped with yellow/buff; bend of wing green; brown/red spot in middle of abdomen; red/brown tail with green at base. Bill grey/black. Eye ring bare and grey, eye orange/brown. P.a. microtera: both adults face darker and more maroon; upper breast dusty brown scalloped with grey/buff; smaller in size.

Colourization Juvenile: As in adults but duller in colour; breast thinly scalloped grey/white; less of a brown/red spot on abdomen; tail shorter. Eye ring grey/white.

Call: Calls are rough and forced pik-pik or pik...pik...pik. Reportedly less harsh than other Pyrrhura sp.
