Status in the Wild
World Population: 10,000-15,000
Range: SW Australia, north to Darling Range, east to longitude 117E.
Habitat: Found in wet sclerophyll forests during breeding season, favouring karri. Outside breeding season may range to farmland, orchards and open woodland.
Threat Summary: A quarter of this species' habitat has been cleared for agriculture and logging. Also threat from feral (non-native) bees infesting nest sites. Even though this bird has been protected since 1996 it is still illegally shot by farmers. Also loss of habitat due to mining.
IUCN Rating: Endangered
Wild Diet: Feeds on cones of Pinus sp. and shrubs. Also bull banksia, apples, pears and almonds from orchards, pomegranates and the nectar of Banksia and marri flowers, and sometimes the seeds of exotic species and those shed by trees burnt by wildfires. Also wood-boring grubs, mainly during the breeding season.
CITES Rating: Appendix II
Ecology: Is wary and difficult to approach. Sentinels alert groups of 50 or more birds that congregate to feed. Pair bond is permanent. Flocks in winter seen in parties of three with two adults and an immature.
Clutch and Egg Size: 1 or 2 ovate eggs, 50 x 34.5mm (2 x 1.3 in)
Breeding Season: Between August and January.
