The Blue-throated Macaw regularly comes to Tabebuia trees for bill cleaning, made evident by telltale wearing of the tips of branches on this tree.

Status in the Wild
World Population: 50-249; several hundred in captivity.
Range: Beni (and possibly N Santa Cruz) department, C Bolivia.
Habitat: Found in flooded areas, such as savannas, palm groves and species-poor tropical forest in wet lowlands. Up to 300m (984 ft).
Threat Summary: Threatened by international trade in wild caught birds, habitat loss, and possible competition from other birds.
IUCN Rating: Critically endangered
Wild Diet: Consume ripe and nearly ripe fruit; also palm fruits, seeds and leaves.
CITES Rating: Appendix I
Ecology: Presence in any area depends on availability of palm fruits. Generally occurs in pairs although will roost with others and possibly with Blue-and-gold and Green-winged Macaws.
Clutch and Egg Size: 2 or 3 elliptical eggs, 55 x 46mm (2.1 x 1.8 in).
Breeding Season: August-November.
