Status in the Wild
World Population: 1000-2499
Range: Confined to NE Brazil, south of the Amazon River, from west of the Tapajos River, western Para, east to NW Maranhao.
Habitat: Lowland rainforest, recently seen more upland, and near Brazil-nut plantations. Up to 500m (1640 ft).
Threat Summary: Habitat loss and fragmentation due to road construction, illegal mahogany harvesting; trapping for live bird trade, hunting for food and sport, and to curtail crop damage.
IUCN Rating: Endangered
Wild Diet: Forage in tall forest but will take some cultivated plants; mainly though take fruits, flowers and buds.
CITES Rating: Appendix I
Ecology: Is somewhat nomadic; will wander into different habitats post-breeding. Gregarious at all times of year. Roosts and flocks in groups of 3-30 birds. Rests in tree-cavities.
Clutch and Egg Size: 2 to 4, round to oval shaped, 34 x 29 mm (1.3 x 1.1 in).
Breeding Season: Breeds communally with several females contributing to one clutch; single pairs also reported. Breeds during wet season - December to April.
Project Status (WPT): The WPT has raised over $54,000 US for the Golden Conure Survival Fund.
