Status in the Wild
World Population:Praslin race less than 100 pairs remain; other races common.
Range:
C.n. nigra: E Madagascar.
C.n. libs: W Madagascar.
C.n. sibilans: Grand Comoro and Anjouan, Comoro Islands.
C.n. barklyi: Praslin Island, Seychelles.
Habitat:
Found in variety of habitats including forest, savanna, wood surrounded villages, primary forest and cultivated areas from sea-level to 2050m (6724 ft).
Threat Summary:
Races in Madagascar and the Comoros are described as common; officially treated as pest species because of crop damage, also hunted for food and taken for pets. Praslin race is severely depleted and is considered critically endangered due to competition for nest sites from Indian Myna Birds.

Least concern
Wild Diet:
Eats seeds, berries, fruits, nuts, insect galls and cultivated crops; more fruit-eating than Vasa Parrot.

Ecology:
Diurnal foraging movements, but resident. Usually seen in small noisy flocks; active on moonlit nights. On Seychelles, birds are generally seen only in singles or pairs.
Clutch and Egg Size:
3 to 5 eggs, oval shaped, 36 x 26mm (1.4 x 1 in).
Breeding Season:
Probably November-February.
