The Santarem Conure is formerly one of eight subspecies (races) of the Painted Conure (Pyrrhura picta). The other races include Deville's Conure, Rose-fronted Conure, Sinu Conure, and others, all of which are now classified as separate species. (Forshaw, 2006)

Status in the Wild
World Population: Not recorded
Range: P.a. amazonum: North bank of Amazon River, from Obidos east to Monte Alegre, Para.
P.a. microtera: South bank of Amazon River at Santarem, and Rio Tapajos, Para, east to W Maranhao and N Mato Grosso.
Habitat: Seen up to 600m (1968 ft). Found in wooded areas including riverine formations, mature evergreen forest and cloud forest. Also seen at forest edge and sometimes in cleared areas.
Threat Summary: Declining in some areas due to deforestation.
IUCN Rating: Not available
Wild Diet: Fruits, seeds, flowers, algae from ponds, and possibly Diptera larvae.
CITES Rating: Appendix II
Ecology: Tends to remain in one area, seen usually in flocks of 10-15 individuals. Keeps to the less dense lower stages of forest interior. Geophagy (clay or soil eating) is seen. Roosts communally.
Clutch and Egg Size: 5-7 elliptical eggs, 26.5 x 19.0mm (1 x 0.7 in).
Breeding Season: July-December
