I have been wondering about to buy an Eastern Rosella (platycercus eximius). But, I have a six years old cockatiel (nymphicus hollandicus).
Some people say that you may have eastern rosella and a cockatiel in same cage, but others say “they don’t come along with eachother”.

Some questions:

1. Can I have in a same cage a rosella and a cockatiel?

2. If yes, which sex would be better, female or male? (my cockatiel is male)

3. Do you have experience of rosellas? (how they really are, how to get them tame and so on)

Thanks in beforehand : )

Dear WPT Friends,

We are very sorry to send news that Catherine A. Toft, Ph.D. passed away last Friday. For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure to get to know her, Cathy was a Professor Emeritus at UC Davis and had spent much of the last eight years writing a comprehensive book on the biology of parrots.

Her courage and positive spirit these last several months have been deeply impressive and inspiring. Her passing is especially sad as she was just beginning to enjoy retirement, had a million hopes and dreams for future projects, and although essentially finished, didn’t quite get to see her parrot book in print.

She was an early member of WPT, and was very excited about our work with parrots and eager to find ways to support our efforts to help all parrots, captive and wild.

The parrots of the world have lost a great friend and ally with her passing. Cathy was devoted to translating her deep scientific understanding of these birds into something that all people could understand and appreciate. Her book will surely help us all take the huge leap from finding these birds amusing animals that can “talk,” to realizing what truly awesome creatures they are ... not to mention helping us all understand how lucky we are to have the chance to share our lives with them.

In sorrow,
The WPT Team

A story about a parrot that had fallen into the wrong (abusive) hands was recently sent to me through another parrot-related forum, and knowing there would be people who care about this issue here, I wanted to share it. There is a petition to pressure the RSPCA to intervene, and they are looking for 5000 signatures. I’ve signed, and would like to see some action taken. The story is supported by a YouTube video that has been getting a lot of attention (NOTE: The person who is keeping this video up is NOT the guy in the video mistreating the parrot. It is said that the guy who originally put this up has since closed his YouTube account). I also want to warn people that the video is disturbing.

Here’s the blog detailing the story, and the link to the YouTube video is above the second photo of the parrot:

Rio: the Movie
Based on a true story

Imagine, for a moment, being one of the last of our species…it’s pretty hard to fathom. There would be no one else for miles around, and you’d be very lonely.

That is how it was for Presley, a lone Spix’s Macaw living in a Colorado living room. He was one of the last of his kind.

There has been a lot of buzz about the release of Rio: the Movie, a quirky tale about a hapless macaw and his journey to a new life. What many people do not realize is that this story is based on the real story of Presley, a critically endangered Spix’s Macaw that was found languishing in Colorado in 2002 after the death of his mate. The story of how he was found and sent back to his native Brazil to meet a new mate is nothing short of miraculous!

Read Presley’s incredible rescue story in the Dec. 2002 article from the Washington Post:
http://bit.ly/presleystory

Spix’s have been considered extinct in the wild since 2000, with fewer than 85 birds currently remaining in captivity. You can learn more about the Spix’s Macaw and other endangered parrots at the World Parrot Trust website: http://www.parrots.org

So grab your kids, spouse and anyone else who enjoys a feel-good animated story, and head out to see Rio this weekend. And while you are at it, take the time to reflect on the deeper meaning of the movie. Blu’s and Presley’s stories have happy endings. Let’s make sure that other Spix’s Macaws do, too.

Hi there, I live in the US and am an active member of the native american church. In our ceremonies we use feathers of all kinds which leads to the purpose of my post. I am looking for parrot feathers of which I could use for this reason. I would be happy to pay for shipping to anyone that might have some or would be able to get some and they would be put to good use. I am looking mostly for macaw, ringneck parakeet, and yellow and black tailed cockatoo tail feathers. But i would happily except any feathers one might offer, Thanks
