I live in a suburb of San Juan, Puerto Rico called Guaynabo. Over the years beautiful blue makaws kept as pets have either escaped and/or set free are now living in Guaynabo, PR. I can see them migrate everyday they move from tree top to tree top. They mostly travel in numbers of 2-10. I estimate there are around 20 in this area. They look healthy and I see them feed on the nuts of palm trees and mangos. I do not know if they are crowding out other bird species or if the numbers have of these birds have grown. I have only lived here for 2 years.

Dear parrot researchers and parrot friends,

You are cordially invited to join the “World Parrot Count”. We, Roelant Jonker and Michael Braun of the “extra-tropical department” of the Parrot Researchers Group of the International Ornithological Union (IOU), would like to initiate the first global parrot census this January in order to get much needed scientific data about parrots living in cities around the globe. This count is intended to become an annual event. For further information please visit the following website:
http://www.cml.leiden.edu/parrot.html

If you have any questions please contact us via the following E-mail-address:
parrotcount at cityparrots dot org

Please feel free to forward this message to everybody who could be interested. We would like to create a global parrot community of professional researchers, field ornithologists as well as amateur naturalist that will enable us to measure the development of native and non-native parrots living in cities.

See you at the roost!

All best,

Roelant Jonker (Leiden University, The Netherlands)
Michael Braun (Heidelberg University, Germany)

Rose-ringed parakeet in southern France

Doing a holiday in southern France, in the Cathar Country near the Pyrenees. I several times observe, what I believe was a Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri).

Could it be a wild North African who has come off course? Or is it – more likely – a domesticated bird that has escaped? (I really want it to be a wild one :-)

The family who ran the bed and breakfast we stayed at, had no interest in observing birds and couldn’t tell me anything about it. It was the only one I saw doing the stay.

Wild IRNs in Amsterdam?

A friend of mine referred to this statue in his blog. http://www.simplyamsterdam.nl/news/Statue_of_Spinoza_unveiled_in_Amsterdam_centre.htm

The statue includes image of Spinoza himself, and next to him an icosahedron, an geometric form with 20 faces. This symbolizes the universe as a model, created by the human mind. The birds on the statue are rose-ringed parakeets, an exotic bird which has settled in Amsterdam in the past few decades. The bright green birds first settled in the Vondelpark, but can nowadays be seen throughout Amsterdam. They symbolize the immigrant city Amsterdam was in the 17th century and still is today.
The roses on his mantle refer to his name: Spinoza means ‘thorn’ in Portuguese.

My husband and I will be in Amsterdam next month, is Vondelpark the best place to see wild IRNs?

Also, is the papagaaien park worth visiting?
