A Suggestion on the WPT Calendar

I just observed that the WPT calendar often has the same species year after year-notably and understandably perhaps the Scarlet and Red& Green Macaw but also others. In one of the calendar-i think 2009, the Rainbow lorikeet featured twice in the same year. While there is no complaint about the astounding quality of the photographs, it does not do justice to the sheer diversity of the parrot family globally. I request that the future calendars also features rarer and/or less charismatic species like the various tiger parrots or pygmy parrots and also some of the Loriculus species.

Making a wish for a WPT book on Golden Conures

I believe the WPT would have the clout to get various field researchers, scientists and aviculturists together to write a very thick and expensive tome on Golden Conures, with LOTS of beautiful photographs of this very photogenic species, and have this book published, with proceeds going to parrot conservation. I’m wishing for something definitive and authoritative, along the lines of J. Abramson’s “The Large Macaws”.

I’m sure there are MANY other Golden Conure groupies all around the world who, like me, would pay an exorbitant price for such a book. I think the Golden Conure T shirts must have been amongst the best fundraisers for the WPT.

Please give this suggestion some serious consideration.

World Parrot Trip (it even has the same initials as WPT)

I’d love for the WPT to organize a World Parrot Trip: maybe charter a plane and do it to celebrate the WPT’s 21st birthday in 2010! I’d love this to be an “around the world” event, including a balanced mixture of captive parrot watching together with wild parrot watching. Here’s my very incomplete starting list of some of my dream “World Parrot Tour” attractions:

1) Tenerife (Loro Parque) - Spix’s Macaw, etc
2) USA (Houston Zoo) - St. Vincent’s Amazon, etc
3) Carribean - Imperial Amazon, St. Lucia Amazon, etc
4) New Zealand - Kakapo
5) Qatar (Al Wabra) - Spix’s Macaw, Lear’s Macaw, etc

Maybe people will pay a lot of money to have the opportunity to see some of these unusual parrots. Money raised can go towards parrot conservation projects.

Feel free to add to this list to include what YOU would like on YOUR dream “World Parrot Trip”!

WPT and Earth Share

Via the Peregrine Fund, I noticed this morning that WPT is not a member organization with Earth Share (http://www.earthshare.org). Earth Share enables work place campaigns, like the Combined Federal Campaign, to designate individual organizations for donations by pay check withdrawal. This could be an excellent, new source of revenue for WPT.

Most people with birds will understand that T-shirts in white are not really a great idea when poop happens.

Steve Boyes and The Meyers Parrot Project

Dear WPT,
I would like to see Steve Boyes of The Meyers Parrot Project added to the field research blog section. I am particularly interested in the research he is doing. I would appreciate the opportunity to read updates about his field research and observations of Meyers Parrots as well as other poicephalus species in the wild.
