why do parotsdo this when being trained?

with either my 2 pet gGeys or the aviary birds they all exhibit a certain behaviour trait. When I ask them to do a behaviour like step up or wave, they will scratch themselves with a claw.

Hi Dot,
It seems when my greys itch or preen themselves when I cue them, it means, “I don’t think so.”
When they scrape the sides of their beaks on surface, it means, “Yeah, come make me do it.” 
Barb H. has told me not to cue as we observed Boss scraping his beak on the branch.  I think she’s right.
