Ellen K. Cook, D.V.M.

I have been a small animal practitioner since I graduated from Purdue University Veterinary School in 1975.  I am the typical general “family” veterinarian and have long been interested in animal behavior. I have become especially fascinated with psittacine behavior when we rehomed Merlin, a Salmon-crested Cockatoo with a load of behavior baggage.

I began to actively practice avian medicine in 2001. I have devoted myself to improving the lives of all my patients, especially the feathered ones.  There is so much general misinformation about basic husbandry for our pet birds that I believe the most important part of my job is client education.  I am privileged to be able to share my knowledge with the responsible parrot people in this forum.
Of course, this discussion is general in nature and cannot substitute for a real client-patient-veterinarian relationship.  Due to time constraints, I may be unable to reply immediately to posts.  Without physically examining a patient, I cannot presume to diagnose, prescribe or treat.  In most situations (and in ALL emergencies), it will be necessary to take your bird to his/her own avian veterinarian.
