Kris Porter and her husband Jerry live in Eagle River, Alaska and currently share their home with 2 Shih Tzu’s, 4 bearded dragons and 7 parrots. They are also avid saltwater hobbyists. Kris is a graduate of the online class in behavior analysis called, Living and Learning with Parrots; and, she has recently written articles on enrichment for Good Bird Magazine.
Kris and Jerry have always had exotic pets in their home; at one time living with 7 ferrets. Observing 7 ferrets at play was an opportunity for Kris to learn a great deal about enrichment and she has applied the same observational skills to watching her parrots interact with their environment. She encourages activity in her parrots offering them a variety of toys, foraging opportunities and alternate play areas throughout the house. Jerry turned their back porch into an aviary and at every opportunity they get the parrots outside. The aviary also has a variety of play areas and offers the parrots many choices for activity.
Kris is the author of The Parrot Enrichment Activity Book. This is a free book full of suggestions and ideas to enrich the lives of parrots and promote activity rather than stillness. Dr. Susan Friedman highly recommends this book and has helped to disseminate the book through her students, worldwide. The book is available for free downloading here at the WPT site, as well.
