Natural Encounters Inc.
Natural Encounters, Inc. is a US-based company on the cutting edge of animal training and presentation. The direction and goals of the company are to Engage, Inspire, and Empower its audience through the exhibition of animals performing trained natural behaviours, carefully designed dialogue, and tastefully choreographed presentation. In 1998 alone, Natural Encounters, Inc. engaged, inspired and empowered nearly one million people.
Steve Martin, founder and president of Natural Encounters Inc, has been a valued World Parrot Trust partner for years. As part of our Board of Trustees, Steve lends valuable leadership and direction for the future of the Trust. He and his staff have raised funds through their conservation fund (NECF) to support our dedicated funds for Palm Cockatoos and Red-fronted Macaws, to name just two. They have provided care and housing for our flock of Blue-throated Macaws. This flock may eventually bolster the wild population in Bolivia if captive breeding and release is deemed advisable for this species.
In addition, Steve and his crew have been great advocates of the Trust by spreading the word about parrots and conservation during their free-flight bird shows around the world. ARCAS (Asociación de Rescate y Conservación de Vida Silvestre)
ARCAS is a non-profit Guatemalan NGO formed in 1989 to build a rescue center to care for and rehabilitate wild animals that were being confiscated on the black market by the Guatemalan government. Since its establishment, the ARCAS Rescue Center has grown into one of the largest and most complex rescue centers in the world, receiving between 300 and 600 animals of more than 40 species per year. ARCAS’s three main project sites are: the Guatemala City area, the remote northern department of Petén, and the Hawaii area of the southern pacific coast.
Since the establishment of the Rescue Center, ARCAS has branched out into other very necessary activities including environmental education, protected areas management, marine turtle conservation, sustainable community development, ecotourism and reforestation. At its Pacific coast site of Hawaii, it manages the most productive of the 21 sea turtle hatcheries in Guatemala, rescuing nearly 40,000 olive ridley and leatherback eggs per year. Also in Hawaii, it is working with the Guatemalan government to establish a 4,000 hectare protected area focused on the local mangrove wetlands. It carries out reforestations of 2 to 40 hectares per year in different sites throughout the country. Tropical Nature Inc.
Tropical Nature is at the head of an innovative and highly successful combination of non-profit and for-profit professionals all working to preserve the Tropics. Tropical Nature currently protects over 300 square miles of forest and is expanding this protection every day. Tropical Nature's team includes Ph.D. biologists, experts in design and construction, and an international network of travel professionals. They work closely with local communities and local conservation organizations to locate, develop, and market outstanding ecotourism projects that result in active forest conservation.
Early on in our history we were contacted by Dr. Charles A. Munn III, the Chairman of Tropical Nature, and the world's leading expert on macaws. We supported his work for Hyacinth Macaws (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), and then moved on to funding extensive projects for the much more endangered Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari). The WPT has also partnered with Tropical Nature to promote ecotourism in South America. Belize Bird Rescue
A Belize based non-profit volunteer group who take in injured sick and abused birds and, wherever possible, rehabilitate and release them back to the wild. Since its inception in April 2004 the Belize Bird Rescue has cared for 72 birds and made 40 successful releases, of which 27 are parrots.The WPT has partnered with the Belize Bird Rescue to support their efforts to stop the trade in wild caught birds.belize bird rescue » -
Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA)
VSPCA is a sanctuary for cows, dogs, cats, turtles, horses, buffalo, many kinds of birds and other small animals. They work mainly in the city of Visahapatnam and its surroundings areas, as well as a growing number of districts in Andhra Pradesh. The World Parrot Trust has partnered with VSPCA to provide logistical support their efforts to help end the wild bird trade in India by confiscating birds found in the trade, aiding in their rehabilitation and eventual release back to the wild.vspca.org » -
Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM)
ITESM is a Mexican University founded in 1943 by a group of Mexican businessmen who created the association called Enseñanza e Investigación Superior, A.C. (Teaching and Research in Higher Education). In the following years, similar associations were set up to undertake the establishment of campuses in cities other than the city of Monterrey . Currently, 33 campuses located in the most important cities in Mexico constitute the Tecnológico de Monterrey Educational System.
The World Parrot Trust has partnered with ITESM to conduct research and support for efforts to save the Thick-billed Parrot. ProFauna Indonesia
ProFauna Indonesia is a non-government organization working for the protection of wild animals and their habitat. Formerly known as KSBK, it was established in Malang City, East Java in 1994 and has offices in Jakarta and Bali, with members throughout the country. The majority of ProFauna's work involves campaigning for the protection of wild animals, investigation into the trade in wild-caught animals and animal rescue.
WPT has worked with ProFauna Indonesia in their successful campaign to encourage the Indonesian government to end the export of wild birds from that area. Pelican Media
Based in San Francisco California, Pelican Media is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose main purpose is the production of films with environmental themes.
Recent projects include short films about California quail, least terns, and pelicans, the conversion of bay salt ponds to natural marsh, and a nonfiction feature about wild parrots that was recently released on DVD after a successful theatrical run.

Defenders of Wildlife
Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. They focus their programs on the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Long known for their leadership on endangered species issues, Defenders of Wildlife also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that will help keep species from becoming endangered. Their programs encourage protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator species for ecosystem health.
The World Parrot Trust has partnered with Defenders on trade related issues as well as funding research on Thick-billed parrots.

As one of the UK's leading universities, the University of Sheffield has more than 24,000 students from 118 countries, and almost 6000 staff. Research partners and clients include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, GSK, ICI, Slazenger, and many more household names, as well as UK and overseas government agencies and charitable foundations.
In association with the University, The World Parrot Trust initiated research on the Yellow-shouldered Amazon beginning at the end of 2005 and is supporting the efforts of two PhD students, Sam Williams and Rowan Martin on Bonaire, an island off the north coast of Venezuela. The island is home to an estimated flock of 400 parrots and the two students are investigating a variety of aspects of Amazon parrot biology including factors limiting nesting success and habitat use, life history patterns and aspects of breeding and mate choice.university of sheffield » -
American Bird Conservancy
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is a US-based charity whose mission is to conserve wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. ABC draws on people and organizations through bird conservation networks to identify the most critical issues affecting birds in these areas. It builds coalitions of conservation groups, scientists, and the public to tackle conservation priorities using the best skills and expertise available.

The San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor is the result of a process started in 2001, when the Executive Committee of the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor began its fight to halt the disappearance of the Great Green Macaw and the Almendro Tree.
WPT is supporting solid conservation work in Costa Rica that is supervised by Guisselle Monge Arias and Olivier Chassot. The Trust's Great Green Macaw Fund has raised over US$20,000 for this species. BioBrasil Foundation
BioBrasil Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization located in Brazil that protects the Hyacinth and Lear's Macaws through innovative ecotourism with the incorporation of former trappers into the overall conservation strategy. BioBrasil has erected new facilities at the existing camp of Hyacinth Valley and constructed a new lodge 15 miles away aptly named Hyacinth Cliffs after the breathtaking views of the red-mesa cliffs surrounding the camp.

Pronatura Noreste & Tecnologico de Monterrey
Pronatura Noreste is a Mexican non-profit environmental conservation organization created in 1997 whose aim is to conserve and promote the sustainable use of natural resources for the health and life of northeastern Mexico. Their mission is the conservation of the flora, fauna and priority ecosystems of northeastern Mexico, promoting society's development in harmony with nature.
The Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), commonly known as Tecnologico de Monterrey, was founded in 1943 and has developed into an institution recognized, both nationally and internationally, for its academic excellence.
The World Parrot Trust, working in collaboration between ITESM and Pronatura, has secured the release of confiscated amazon parrots. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust was established in 1963 by Gerald Durrell, and has at its Jersey site a unique centre for the breeding of endangered animals. This conservation-breeding centre is one of the key tools that Durrell uses in its mission to save species from extinction. In addition to managing a wide range of bird, reptile, amphibian and mammalian breeding programmes at Durrell, the Trust has an extensive overseas species conservation programme and a proven record in achieving species recovery.
We have always enjoyed a close relationship with the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust (now the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust), and in 1990 they invited us to join in the financial support for the Echo Parakeet (Psittacula eques) on Mauritius.
With a blend of ingenious scientific and avicultural initiatives and a series of outstanding hand-rearing experts, the total number of Echo Parakeets has increased to over 300 individuals. Rare Species Conservatory Foundation
RSCF is a US-based charity dedicated to preserving biodiversity through grass roots conservation programs based in sound science. RSCF employs the "flagship species" concept to identify and conserve high profile, priority species in order to gain protection for the ecosystems they represent. Propagation and management of such flagship species, along with field-based research and habitat acquisition, are ultimately directed toward long-term biodiversity preservation at a regional level. RSCF provides consulting and technical services to governments and conservation/research organizations engaged in preservation initiatives, and forms educational, scientific and economic partnerships to expedite habitat and species preservation projects.
The World Parrot Trust has worked with the RSCF to aid in the conservation of the Imperial and Red-necked Amazons on the island of Dominica. RARE led the efforts towards the creation of a national park to protect these species and jointly raised funds with the Trust for monitoring and field research, a new 4x4 vehicle to navigate the rough roads in the area, land purchases to create a buffer zone on the edge of the national park, and to finish the Visitor Centre of the park.rare species conservatory foundation » -
National Trust for Fiji -- Search for the Red-throated Lorikeet
Devoted to conservation of public resources the National Trust of Fiji is a statutory organization devoted to conservation of public resources.Created the trust in 1970, the Trust administers the country's six national parks including Koroyanitu National Park, Sigatoka Sandunes National Park, Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve, Bouma National Park, Nausori Highlands, and Lovoni Trail.
The WPT starting working closely with the National Trust for Fiji, in 2001 when we sent Kirsty Swinnerton to carry out a preliminary survey on this region. She reported back that a search for the endangered Red-throated Lorikeet (Charmosyna amabilis) would be a priority. That six-month project has now been completed and reports have appeared in PsittaScene. RARE
Rare, a U.S.-based conservation organization, works globally to equip people in the world's most threatened natural areas with the tools and motivation they need to care for their natural resources. For the last 30 years at more than 90 sites in over 40 nations, Rare has focused as much on people as on science -- addressing the underlying social and economic factors that create environmental threats.
Rare's approach has been to develop a suite of social marketing and business development tools that motivate local communities to protect their natural surroundings. Rare's signature "Pride campaign" builds grassroots support for environmental protection by training local conservation leaders in the use of commercial marketing tactics to build awareness, influence attitudes, and enable meaningful change. Pride campaigns produce a groundswell of support that leads to tangible conservation successes, such as forming new national parks, reforming legislation, or reducing threats from forest fires or over-fishing.
The original idea for a partnership came from Paul Butler of RARE, who asked if we could provide an educational parrot bus for the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. This bus was to travel all over the island, visiting schools and other locations, telling the story of the endangered St. Lucia Amazon (Amazona versicolor) and what had to be done to save it from extinction.
Our team at Paradise Park, led by David Woolcock and Nick Reynolds, bought a used bus and fitted it out with working models, video programmes and other educational facilities, then shipped it out on a banana boat and handed it over to staff of the island's forestry department. It was a great success, and resulted in similar buses being provided for the neighbouring islands of Dominica and St. Vincent, and also for use in Paraguay.rare » -

The World Conservation Union is the world's largest and most important conservation network. The Union's mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The World Conservation Union is a multicultural, multilingual organization with 1000 staff located in 62 countries. Its headquarters are in Gland, Switzerland.
The Trust partnered with the IUCN to the produce the Parrot Action Plan; now the definitive document listing the 98 threatened species, with recommendations for their conservation. With additional help offered from British Airways Assisting Conservation to fly in representatives from the USA, Australia and Europe for a meeting in London this considerable and lengthy project was finalized in 2001.iucn » -
Wildlife Conservation Society -- Citron-crested Cockatoos
The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild lands. They do so through careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. WCS is committed to this work because they believe it essential to the integrity of life on Earth.
The Citron-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua. s. citrinocristata), a subspecies of the Yellow-crest, has suffered greatly from poaching for the international pet trade. The WPT has funded part of the work, on the island of Sumba, of Margaret Kinnaird and Tim O'Brien from the Wildlife Conservation Society to study the Citron-crest and determine how to best to save remaining populations.wildlife conservation society »
