Since 1981 when it was listed on CITES Appendix II, 413,505 wild-caught individuals have been recorded in international trade. Documenting the effects of current trapping processes for the Blue-fronted Amazon is essential work in helping to curtail trade in this species. Trapping of this Amazon is the only harvest of a wild bird anywhere that claims to be sustainable.
Our initial findings indicate that this is not the case and we have let officials in the US and the UK know how unsustainable this harvest is in practice. The collection of these parrots is sanctioned and overseen by the Argentine government and our research indicates that the rules governing these practices are frequently violated. Further, the Argentine government has been urging the USA to open its market.
We therefore feel that clear documentation of the practices of the trappers and traders is especially crucial in providing importing countries with current, accurate and independent information.
