Hyacinth Macaw & Ecotourism
1990 - current
Heavy illegal trade in wild-caught birds has decimated populations of the Hyacinth Macaw. Local hunting for food and feathers, and habitat loss for hydroelectric projects and cattle ranching has further affected this species. WPT has helped with crucial funding via the Hyacinth Fund to encourage ecotourism and protect crucial foraging and breeding areas. Due to the protection afforded them in their natural habitat their numbers are now on the rise.
