Cuban Amazon Research

1990 - 1999 Bahama Amazon

The Cayman Brac Amazon (Amazona leucocephala hesterna) and Bahamas Amazon (Amazona leucocephala bahamensis) are both subspecies of the Cuban Amazon. Both races are facing similar threats on the islands where they originate: deforestation, threat of hurricanes and fires and recent road construction and development.

Beginning in the 1990s several studies were begun on the two subspecies, noting population numbers, assessing threats, and gathering ecological and behavioural information crucial to their conservation. The WPT aided the efforts of Dr. James Wiley, Mark Stafford and others by soliciting members for donations of much needed items, such as 4x4 vehicles, and others.
