The St. Vincent Amazon has been historically threatened by hunting, capture for the wild-bird trade and habitat loss. Charcoal production, banana plantations and the felling of key nesting trees in the search for nestlings by poachers has reduced the population to about 800 individuals.
WPT has supported the St. Vincent Amazon by providing veterinary help and skills, funds to carry out much needed surveys of populations and habitat, and aviary construction for captive breeding populations. Also the Trust has produced a very successful series of educational buses in Central America, one of those for the island of St. Vincent.
