Story
Grey Parrots are in serious danger.
These iconic birds are at risk of extinction from illegal trafficking and habitat loss. Thousands are still trapped each year range-wide, and important nesting trees are being lost to farming and oil palm plantations. In Nigeria alone, the government has announced plans to clear an additional three million hectares by 2027, which would greatly threaten the Greys' last habitat there.
Fortunately, the World Parrot Trust and its in-country partners are working quickly to interrupt trafficking and protect vital forests. In Nigeria, Ifeanyi Ezenwa, WPT's Program Coordinator there, is focusing on easing the negative impacts of oil palm production. Ifeanyi is hopeful - he and his colleagues will develop plans with government and business to protect key areas that Greys need to survive. Elsewhere in Africa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 63 Grey Parrots caught in trade were intercepted, rehabilitated and released back to the wild.
All of this was possible with your help. The work is not done, however. With your support, we can continue to:
o Support law enforcement and local communities as the first-line defense against trapping
o Ensure rescued parrots are rehabilitated and released
o Educate the public about the harms of trapping and help find alternative incomes
o Work with governments, companies and communities to spare critical habitat
o Develop reforestation projects beneficial to people and parrots
Grey Parrot survival depends on you. Please join us to protect these remarkable birds.
