Confiscations and education

Andre Saidenberg | Dec 15, 2009

Among several recent confiscations this one demonstrates how birds are treated poorly although there are worst examples. This page is in Portuguese and describes a very common fact that happens every year (breeding season of amazons start on September and goes until March): The big city centers of Southeastern Brazil are the main final route for illegal birds:

This car had 60 Blue fronted Amazons (Amazona aestiva) nestlings crammed inside the luggage compartment. Two of them were found already dead, the rest were sent to a rehabilitation facility.

Having in mind that an integral part of fighting the wild caught trade is educating the general public that is responsible for the demand for these birds as pets, the WPT is going to actively work on the education field joining forces with IBAMA (Brazilian Evironmental agency) contributing with educational posters and leaflets to be distributed on events, subway stations and other public places for the upcoming 2010 national campaign.

Shocking people may be the only way in many cases to help them realize the extent of their actions when they buy a wild caught bird. Examples can be found here (images may be disturbing):

The campaign says: THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE YOU BUY.

Thanks to your help in the Fly Free campaign we will be able to make an important change in this scenario!
