St. Lucia Amazon Education Program

1991, 1992 St. Lucia Amazon

The St. Lucia Amazon (Amazona versicolor). has suffered substantial losses due to rapid human expansion and loss of crucial breeding areas over the island of St. Lucia. With a population numbering in the several hundreds the species is losing ground fast.

At the request of Paul Butler of RARE The WPT team at Paradise Park, led by David Woolcock and Nick Reynolds, bought a used bus and fitted it out with interactive models, video programs and educational materials, then shipped it to the forestry department in St. Lucia. The first WPT Bus in the Caribbean was to travel all over the island visiting schools and community centers, telling the story of the endangered St. Lucia Amazon The venture was so successful they built two more, for Dominica and St. Vincent. Paradise Park and WPT chosen by BBC Wildlife Magazine as winners of the Zoo Conservation Award for Excellence.
