Parrots for breakfast!?!

Sam Williams, PhD | Apr 10, 2010

As I write this there are two parrots on our bird table! I’m back on Bonaire and there’s been so little rain this rainy season that all the birds are getting a bit desperate. Now after a week of crossing fingers they’ve finally spotted the mangos.

It’s amazing, It’s Saturday morning, when things go a little slower. I could hear parrots in the area so I made my cup of tea and sat on the step, just incase. Sure enough they arrived and now they are not even 10 meters away. After tentatively inching closer along the branch one plucked up the courage and stepped onto the bit of scrap wood we tied up. But then the other chased him off as if to say “that’s my mango”. I thought they were a pair but apparently not. It’s great, this is more or less the first proper view I’ve had of these guys as I am still mostly working on the computer (and still moaning about it too - I know I’ll stop!) and straight away I get to see some classic barbadensis behaviour: flaring eyes and tail fanning. They are such feisty birds.

Just to really finish of this amazing experience they are lit perfectly with morning sunlight. Wow! A nice cup of tea and parrots only 10 meters away, it’s almost a perfect morning. If only my girlfriend Rhian were here, we could have pancakes and then it would be my perfect morning! She will arrive on Tuesday and it will be great for her to have these moments too. The pair of us have been working on things that have seemed so distant from parrots and the outdoor field work we love but this is a great reward, for me at least.

They are still there so although I wanted to share the moment I will leave you now and get back to soaking it up. More from me soon.
