The Fat club Four arrive in the release aviary

Sam Williams, PhD | Mar 09, 2011

What an epic day!

The morning began with “The Release Experience”, my earlier note. After a quick breakfast of my own I got down to finishing a grant application. This was interrupted on more than one occasion by the call of released parrots ‘Where are they? What are they doing? Are they ok?”

The grant got finished and then Nat a good friend turned up to help me start Percy the (t)rusty parrot car. He’s been sat with a dead battery for three days meaning I had to cycle to town for a shopping trip. Anyway we got Percy started and then I had that do the “don’t touch the key or stall it” drive to town. With a new battery fitted some errands run I went to the Ministry for Agriculture.

I swear it wasn’t just empty nest syndrome… I picked up some more birds to go in the release aviary. No no there are valid reasons for doing it so quickly! Primarily it was because I wanted some birds in the aviary to attract the others back so they spot the food and know where to come should they wish. The other reason is that the parrots I brought over this time are going to need some serious work. They have been called many things, none of them nice because these guys are out right nasty but hilarious with it. They are also lazy so they’re experience over the next few weeks is going to be a mixture of SuperNanny and Fat Club!

After letting them loose in the aviary. I got to have a cup of tea with Milk Chocolate digestives this is a real treat as they are rarely seen on Bonaire mmm. No time for putting my feet up though. The decoys worked as well as any delinquents (sorry I should be more positive, from here on I will say Darlings) could and in no time their calls drew in the others. I saw seven, possibly all nine of the released birds (2 may have come back around) and three were feeding on the aviary roof before sunset. It was amazing! It took a bit of running around. At first encouraging them on to the roof (Their not total aversion to me was no bad thing here). Then making sure there was enough jummy mango on the roof, and getting the water spray as one of the Darlings started getting grumpy with the released birds but all in all it worked out.

By this point Seren my dog was beside herself with my neglect so despite a 530 wake up no siesta and a full day we went for a sunsett run. A great way to wrap up the day. Now it’s time for bed as tomorrow I will have to be up early again. Let’s see what adventures await!

I’ve put a whole album of pictures on the facebook page and tomorrow I’ll add movies. Do please have a look http://www.facebook.com/echobonaire.org
